A QR code is a square, black-and-white pattern that stores information a phone camera can read in an instant — think of it as a barcode that grew a second dimension so it could hold a whole lot more.
You have almost certainly scanned one this week: on a restaurant table, a parking meter, a poster, a product box, or a plane ticket. Those pixelated squares have quietly become one of the most common ways to move a small piece of information from the physical world into your phone. What does "QR code" actually mean?
QR stands for Quick Response. The name comes from its original purpose: letting factory scanners read the code quickly, from any angle, without fussy alignment. It was invented in 1994 by a team led by engineer Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave, a company in the Toyota group, to track car parts on a production line. Today the QR code is an international standard (ISO/IEC 18004), which means any compliant scanner anywhere in the world can read any compliant code. That shared rulebook is a big part of why QR codes work so reliably across billions of devices.
How is a QR code different from a regular barcode?
A traditional retail barcode — the striped kind on a cereal box — is a one-dimensional (1D) code. It stores data only across its width, in the thickness and spacing of vertical bars. That limits it to roughly a dozen digits.
A QR code is a two-dimensional (2D) code. It stores data both horizontally and vertically, in a grid of tiny squares called modules. Using both directions dramatically increases how much it can hold. Where a barcode carries a short product number, a QR code can carry a full web address, a paragraph of text, contact details, or Wi-Fi login information.

How does a QR code store information?
At its heart, a QR code is just binary — ones and zeros — painted in black and white. Each little square module is either dark (a 1) or light (a 0). A scanner reads that pattern of light and dark, reassembles the bits, and decodes them back into text.

The three big square corners
Look at any QR code and you'll spot three larger squares in three of the corners. These are the finder patterns, and they're the secret to that "quick response." They tell the scanner, instantly, "here is a QR code, and here is how it's rotated." That's why you can scan a code upside down or at an angle and it still works. Why do QR codes still work when they're scratched or dirty?
One of the cleverest things about QR codes is that they can lose a chunk of themselves and still be read. This is thanks to error correction, a mathematical safety net built into every code. Depending on the level chosen when the code is made, roughly 7%, 15%, 25%, or even 30% of the code can be damaged, smudged, or covered — and it still scans.

What can you actually put in a QR code?
QR codes are wonderfully flexible. The most common uses include:
- Website links (URLs) — by far the most popular use.
- Wi-Fi credentials — scan to join a network, no typing.
- Contact cards — save a name, phone, and email in one tap.
- Plain text — a note, a serial number, a short message.
- Payments and tickets — boarding passes, event entry, transit.
- App downloads — pointing to the right store page.
Are all QR codes the same?
Not quite. There's an important split between static and dynamic codes. A static code stores your data directly in the pattern — the link is the code, and it never expires. A dynamic code stores a short redirect link that points somewhere else, which can be changed or tracked later (and, in some cases, switched off by whoever runs the service).

Do I need a special app to scan one?
For most modern phones, no. The camera app on recent iPhones and Android devices reads QR codes automatically — just point and a link pops up. Older phones may need a free scanner app, but the built-in camera has become the standard reader.

No. A QR code is just stored data — usually a link or some text. It cannot run a program by itself. The risk comes from where a link leads, so treat an unexpected QR link with the same caution you'd give any unknown web address.
Do QR codes expire?
A static QR code never expires — the data is baked right into the pattern, so it works forever. Some dynamic QR codes can stop working if the service hosting the redirect shuts it down or ends a subscription. That's a key reason to prefer static codes.
Why are QR codes black and white?
High contrast between dark and light modules is what lets a camera reliably tell a "1" from a "0." Black on white gives the sharpest contrast, though other high-contrast color pairs can work if there's enough difference between them.
