Where did the QR code come from?
The QR code was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara and his small team at Denso Wave, a subsidiary of the Toyota group in Japan. Denso Wave built components and systems for the automotive industry, and by the early 1990s the company had a growing problem: the ordinary one-dimensional barcode simply could not keep up with the pace of modern manufacturing.
"QR" stands for Quick Response, and that name is a direct clue to the problem it was built to solve. Factories needed something that scanners could read almost instantly, from any angle, even when it was a little dirty or damaged. The traditional striped barcode fell short on every count.
What problem was the QR code invented to solve?
Toyota's production system is famous for efficiency, and that efficiency depended on tracking thousands of components as they moved through assembly. A standard barcode could hold only about 20 characters, so workers often had to attach as many as ten separate barcodes to a single box of parts and scan each one individually.
This was slow, error-prone and exhausting. Denso Wave asked Hara to design a code that could:
- Hold far more information than a 1D barcode.
- Be read extremely quickly, even on a fast-moving line.
- Survive grease, scratches and partial damage.
- Be scanned from any orientation, without careful lining-up.
The answer was to move from one dimension to two. Instead of encoding data only in the width of stripes, a two-dimensional code stores information both horizontally and vertically, dramatically increasing how much a single symbol can carry. How did the finder patterns come about?
The single most important insight in the QR code's design is the trio of nested squares in three corners. These are called finder patterns, and they are what let a scanner locate and orient the code in a fraction of a second, no matter which way it is turned.
Hara reportedly studied the ratio of black to white areas across huge numbers of printed materials to find a pattern that almost never appears by accident. The result was the distinctive 1:1:3:1:1 ratio inside each finder square.

How is a QR code different from older codes?

Why did Denso Wave make the QR code free to use?
Here is the decision that changed everything. Denso Wave did patent the QR code, but the company chose not to enforce those patents against people who used the format. As long as you follow the published standard, you can create and read QR codes without paying a licence fee.
This was a deliberate bet. Denso Wave reasoned that the code would only become valuable if it was everywhere, and it could only become everywhere if it was free. By giving the specification away, the company hoped to sell the scanners and systems that read the codes, while the codes themselves spread without friction.

Why did QR codes take so long to catch on?

Early QR campaigns often required downloading a special scanning app, then pointing a sluggish camera at a poster and waiting. The friction was too high, and the payoff too small.
Two developments changed the picture:
