The QR code you know is really the head of a whole family: Micro QR, rectangular rMQR, the high-density iQR, the original Model 1, and creative cousins like Frame QR and SQRC each tweak the basic idea for a specific job.
When people say "QR code" they almost always mean the familiar square with three big corner markers. But over the years, Denso Wave and the standards bodies created several variants to fit awkward spaces, cram in more data, or add special features. The standard QR code (Model 2)
First, a baseline. The everyday QR code is technically Model 2, the refined design used almost everywhere today. It ranges from version 1 (21×21 modules) up to version 40 (177×177), has three finder patterns, alignment patterns on all but the smallest sizes, and four error-correction levels. Micro QR — one finder, tiny footprint
The Micro QR code is a shrunken version designed for situations where space is precious. Its headline change: it has just one finder pattern instead of three. That single corner marker frees up room, letting the code be much smaller than a standard QR of similar capacity.
Micro QR comes in four sizes, labelled M1 to M4, from a diminutive 11×11 modules up to 17×17. Capacity is modest — a handful to a few dozen characters — so it's aimed at short data like small identifiers. You'll find Micro QR on tiny electronic components and compact labels where a full QR simply wouldn't fit. It's part of the QR Code standard itself.
rMQR — the rectangular QR
Sometimes a square is the wrong shape. The rMQR (rectangular Micro QR) code is a long, thin variant designed for narrow strips of space — think the slim side of a cable, a pen, or a metal part. It keeps more data capacity than Micro QR while fitting spaces where a square code would be too tall.
rMQR comes in a range of width-by-height combinations, so a designer can pick a rectangle that matches the available surface. It's a relatively recent addition, defined in its own standard closely related to ISO/IEC 18004, and it's especially handy in industrial marking.
iQR — high density and flexibility
The iQR code is the family's overachiever. It can be square or rectangular, supports a wider range of sizes than standard QR, and can pack in more data per area. iQR also offers finer control over error correction and can produce both larger-capacity codes and very compact ones.
Because it's more specialized, iQR is less common in consumer settings and more at home in industrial and logistics contexts where maximizing data in a fixed space is worth adopting a less universally supported format. Not every scanner reads iQR, which is part of why standard QR still dominates public use.
Model 1 — the original
Before Model 2, there was Model 1: the very first QR code design from 1994. It looks similar but lacks the alignment patterns that Model 2 added, so it doesn't cope as well with distortion at larger sizes and has a lower maximum capacity. Frame QR — a code with a canvas
Frame QR is a designer-friendly variant with a deliberate blank area in the middle — a "canvas" — where you can place a logo, illustration, or photo without breaking the code. Standard QR codes lean on error correction to tolerate a small central logo, but Frame QR builds the empty region into the format itself, giving more room for branding while keeping the code readable. It's popular for marketing where visual appeal matters.
SQRC — the code with a secret
SQRC (Secure QR code) looks like an ordinary QR code but carries a hidden layer of data readable only by scanners with the right key. To a normal reader it shows public information; to an authorized reader it also reveals private, encrypted content. This makes SQRC useful for access control, internal tracking, or anti-counterfeiting, where you want one code to serve both public and restricted purposes.

Which variant should you use?
For almost everyone, the answer is the standard QR code — and it's not close. Its universal support means any phone camera or scanner will read it, which is exactly what you want for a poster, menu, business card, or product. The specialized variants shine only when their particular constraint applies:
- Extremely tight space? Micro QR or rMQR.
- A long, narrow surface? rMQR.
- Maximum data in a fixed industrial mark? iQR.
- Strong branding with a central image? Frame QR (or a standard code with a high error level).
- Hidden, restricted data? SQRC.
Reach for a variant only when the standard QR genuinely can't do the job. Compatibility is a feature, and the plain square has the most of it.
