Behind every barcode that scans cleanly in any shop, in any country, sits an invisible referee: GS1. This global nonprofit sets the rules so that a product code assigned in one factory means exactly the same thing to a till on the other side of the world. What is GS1?
GS1 is a global, not-for-profit organisation that develops and maintains the standards behind the world's most common barcodes. It does not sell scanners or print labels. Its job is to keep the rules consistent, so that the numbers encoded in a UPC, EAN, or shipping barcode are unique and universally understood.
Think of GS1 as the body that guarantees no two products share an identity. Without a neutral referee issuing numbers, two companies could easily pick the same code for different goods, and every scanner in the world would be confused. GS1 prevents that by handing out the raw material of identification: company prefixes.
What is a GS1 company prefix?
When a business wants to put barcodes on its products, it registers with GS1 and receives a company prefix, a unique string of digits assigned to that company alone. Every barcode the company creates begins with this prefix, which is what makes its codes globally distinct.
The company then adds its own product numbers after the prefix to identify individual items, and the system appends a check digit at the end. Because the prefix is unique to the company and the item number is unique within the company, the finished code is unique in the world.
The company prefix is the reason a cereal made in one country and a phone case made in another never collide at the checkout. Each starts from its own reserved block of numbers.
What is a GTIN?
The number that identifies a product is called a GTIN, or Global Trade Item Number. It is the umbrella term GS1 uses for the identifier carried inside retail barcodes, whatever their exact format.
The familiar retail codes are all GTINs in different lengths:
- UPC-A carries a 12-digit GTIN, the standard in North American retail.
- EAN-13 carries a 13-digit GTIN, the worldwide retail standard.
- ITF-14 carries a 14-digit GTIN used to identify shipping cartons and cases.

What is GS1-128 and why does logistics need it?
Retail codes answer a single question: which product is this? Logistics needs to answer many more. What is the batch number? When does it expire? How many units are in this carton? To carry that richer data, GS1 defined GS1-128.
GS1-128 is built on the Code 128 symbology, and it uses special markers called Application Identifiers. Each identifier is a short code that tells the scanner what the following digits mean, for example that they represent a best-before date or a serial number. This turns a barcode from a simple lookup key into a structured record.

What is the GS1 Digital Link?
For decades, a barcode pointed inward, to a private database that only the retailer could read. The GS1 Digital Link initiative changes that by connecting a product's identity to a web address. In other words, it lets a barcode behave like a URL.
With Digital Link, scanning a code can take a shopper straight to a web page: product information, provenance, recycling instructions, warranty registration, or a promotion. The same scan a cashier uses to ring up a price can also serve a customer with a rich, connected experience. It bridges the old world of numeric lookup codes and the modern world of the web.
